Bronwen Main and Frank Burridge opened not with their best work but with ruins: cyclone and earthquake damage on Gili Meno, buildings described as ghosts of a culture that valued speed over quality. From there, the five questions the practice asks of any material. Where does it come from, how much energy made it usable, whose hands shaped it, how does it behave climatically, and what happens when the building dies. The talk moved through soil, hemp, biochar, agroforestry timber with Mark Tuckey, the melaspas site blessing, and a rattan chair whose structure came from an elephant ear leaf.
