Our first building on Gili Meno: a place to grow seedlings. Once sourced and sprouted the first time, non-GMO seeds can be collected from the the next harvests, cultivated and redistributed, creating a positive feedback loop: each harvest brings back more seed, making more nutrient-dense non-GMO food growth possible on the island. The beginning of a trophic cascade.
This was our first time working with traditional bamboo craftsman from Lombok. We wanted to understand how they worked: their way of detailing joins, hanging doors, resolving junctions. Inspired by Ruskin's account of stonemasons in The Stones of Venice, we provided simple dimensioned schematics of the frame and member sizes, and left the detailing up to the craftsmen to express their skill and fraternity with the material. We learned from watching them.
